The history

The oldest fishing village in Lofoten

Kabelvåg is in Vågan municipality, and it is the oldest fishing village in Lofoten. This was the place where the commercial part of Lofoten fishing began 1000 years ago. To the bays around Kabelvåg, the old Vågan, fishermen from all over North Norway came to harvest their share of the annual influx of cod. And Vågan grew to become the center of medieval Hålogaland. On the property of Lofoten museum in Storvågan, 1 km to the west of Kabelvåg, you can see the remains of old Vågar.
