The area
Jotunheimen
Røisheim is situated near the Sognefjellsveien road, between Lom in Gudbrandsdalen and Luster in Sogn. This is the highest mountain pass in northern Europe, and the highest point is 1434 meters above sea level. The road across the mountain gives you a dazzling panoramic view of the bluish-white glaciers and majestic peaks of Jotunheimen, before you reach the world’s longest fjord, the 200 kilometres long Sognefjorden. Jotunheimen was “discovered” for real in 1820, when two young students, Carl Boeck and Baltasar Keilhau, explored the now so famous mountain area. Through their enthusiastic descriptions a “new” mountain world became known far outside the borders of Norway.
